Comparative esssay

Intro: Both poems are similar in the form of power. In remains and emigree they are similar due to power of memory. Both poems use the power of memory to show the feeling between the 2 protagonists. They explore the mind to find something very sad or very happy. In this case the first power of memory is a sad moment, a moment of madness from the protagonist in remains. A moment in which the protagonist kills someone due to his authority in the army. In emigree it is a happy memory, a memory which the protagonist remembers to be an even better time that right at this moment wherever it is. She knows about the death and destruction but still finds a way to look past it. Thy are similar because they are both sad moments in which they both had to do something they didn’t want to do.
On the other hand they’re different because of what they represent. In emigree she represents memory and how she feels about her old country and everything that happened before, how her life could have been better, it also can tell us how it could have been worse if she did not move, and the outcomes that could have happened. Then in remains we see guilt and regret in the killing and that he can’t get it put of his head, whether he used drugs or drinking. It shows again how hard it is to make a decision. This decision may have affected his life just like the protagonist in emigree. It doesn’t just affect his personal life but his home life and what people
Think about him outside in the streets, whether it’s hero or villain.

paragraph 1: “He’s here in my head when I close my eyes”. This is showing the power of guilt. He’s guilty at the fact that he killed a man who could not have been a threat. His assumption had caused him not to even think, but now that he has killed him, he cannot even stop thinking about him. “He’s here in my head, and the drink and drugs wont flush him out”. This quote is suggesting that no matter what he does he CANNOT get the man out of his head. We see the power of memory here as he knows there is nothing he can do to get away from his wrong doings.

paragraph 2: “But I am branded with an image of sunlight”. This shows the power of memory and uses the effect of imagery. The power of memory is used with the words branded. Branded means marked. She is branded with her old country and remembers it greatly as sun filled. The use of imagery is used to show us her visual image of her old country. She sees it as bright and beautiful but the reality is that it is not. In the paragraph above they both are similar in the way that they both show the power of memory. Firstly in paragraph 1 memory is shown when the man keeps thinking about the fact he had killed somebody due to his assumption. In addition to this power of memory is used again to show what she thinks of her old country. There is also a contrast to her visual image and the reality.

paragraph 3: The power of memory is used in remains to show that the man he killed isn’t forgotten. “I walk right over it week after week”. This shows us that he cannot stop thinking about the person he killed. His job is a big effect on why he still thinks of him. The fact he has to walk past that specific spot everyday will cause him to never forget. He says he uses drinks and drugs to flush out the memory but it will never leave him.

Paragraph 4: lastly the city has too much power. In emigree the city is over powered. we see this when she says they accuse her of being dark in “their free” city. However they seem to contradict as you can not be thought of as an equal but the city is not everyone’s, it’s a certain persons or people who are more respected.
This could be one of the reasons she left her old country. The fact that she stills see the country as sun filled suggests there were good aspects of her old country too and it was not all inequality and disrespect and disregard for others.

Conclusion: In conclusion the power is used to show us the different views of what the protagonists says about their perspectives. In remains and the emigree they have the similarity of power of memory. They both remember a big moment of their life which changed them. They had both chose one of the most important aspects and remembered them. Both poems also use power of authority. Firstly we see this in emigree when the people who had more power of the protagonist forced her to leave. This could have been due to many other factors such as war and no jobs. They take jobs away so people move out of the country, and they make war so people find it uninhabitable to stay in and leave out of their “own judgement”, even though they’re being forced but not straight to there face.
However both poems have comparisons too. In emigree over powering of the county is used. The country forces out the people they do not want to be there by starting things to make them leave, such as war, no
housing and no transportation. The fact it used to be a sun filled and bright place which is now war torn shows the use of how power of memory is used and how affective it is. On the other hand I’m remains power of guilt and feeling is used. The protagonist has killed somebody and feels guilty now. However he knows he cannot changed what he has done. However again both things are very similar as they both relate to memory.

essay

this essay will be about the perspectives of Mumbai through 3 different characters. Mumbai is a slum in India. the 3 characters are Abdul, Asha and Sunil. we are going to be analysing their points of view on Annawadi and how their roles in the slum affect their judgement. firstly we meet Abdul who is a garbage seller. We then meet Asha who is trying to become the slum lord. we already know she wants a wealthy lifestyle as she has designer napkins. lastly we meet sunil who started a new lifestyle of stealing rubbish and selling it to earn a “disposable income”.

we are introduced, firstly, to abdul. abdul is around 15 years old. he buys and sells rubbish to make a profit. he is the bread winner in his family. abduls point of view differs from asha and sunils as a place in which nobody can be trusted. we see this when abdul says “the better i know you, the more i dislike you”i think that this suggests people in annawadi are not what they seem. this shows us abdul is quite a quiet character and likes to keep himself to himself. however is this how he really is or an act?

abdul says “even goats eyes were heavy with sleep”. i think that this suggests that abdul sees annawadi is a restless place. however i think this the reason annawadi is so restless is because all the people think about is their work and without the work they become bored. the fact goats can not sleep also suggests the people of annawadi are loud and reckless. we see this when abdul says “besides, this was the gentle going hour in which he hated the most”. this can also suggest that if this is the most peaceful hour where even animals can not sleep how is the rest of day, is it worse?

we are then introduced to asha. she is an older lady and is trying to become the slum lord of annawadi. she is the mum of manju and rahul. asha has a very rich taste and likes expenisve things like patterned napkins. we see this in her house. she has an “every man for themself logic”. this determines her character as we know she already is trying to become slum lord and in doing this will do anything to have this role.

“she had by now seen past the obvious truth that – that mumbai was a hive of hope and ambition”. i think that this suggests she once thought of mumbai was a good place and a place were people could do well, but we have now seen that she knows what the “real” annawadi is like and that the people in it are almost as accurate as what the rose petals suggests they are.

we last see sunil. sunil is a younger boy who sees the world in much a more sophisticated way then other children in his age group. he knew that the reason his friends got ice cream when photographers came were to butter them up after they make it out like annawadi is the worst place in the world. if only he saw what was on the tv, what the rose petals thought of the shit between. however sunil was still a young desperate child and thought if he stayed in the background a woman from the tv would take him for being “different” from the other children, knowing that they thought of all the children as the same “kind”.”And why food and clothing got donated and then furtively resold into the orphanage”. this is suggesting to me that the people do not care about the annawadians and just to make their documentaries. the quote was the second half of a sentence the narrator was telling us about sunil, related to the paragraph above.

“Sunil and Sunita had stood outside the huts of their neighbors at dinner time”. this is suggesting that they were so hungry that they looked at neighbors food and mental imagined themselves as not hungry. this shows what kind of lifestyle they are living, but it does not make them the shit in between. sunil, however started to rob metals with a local friend and started to make a disposable income. he knew he would like this job which changed his view of what the slum really was.

in conclusion I think that the perspectives of the 3 characters are the same but differ because of their roles. all of them believe that annawadi is a poor and is not a nice place to be. we see this as each character quotes a time in their life which has been bad. however i think there is a contrast because the fact that sunil was stealing and selling rubbish which is really a bad thing. their perceptions are similar but different. It is like makeup on a person, the roses make the adverts acting like they care and making them self look good and the Annawadians are the person behind it all. ‘But it is not really difference the oppressor fears so much as similarity’. i think this quote really shows how the characters think because they are not scared about what they know and how they are the same, but from what they do not know and how different, not just them but the’rose petals’ are and what really lies outside annawadi.

india hw

india has become a developing country in many ways.

advantages: India has made many more housing for people to live in. They have introduced better education for young people and they are trying to make a safer area for the growing population.

disadvantages: India however, has a large population. this leads to over population and small areas can be crowded. As India is a growing population country there is not lots of supplies for everyone in those places, leading to famine and higher death rates.

Dear Lamarck,

Your theory is complete rubbish. It is not correct. The individuals in a species vary in features, and will not always be the same. The features however can be passed on to their offspring.

summary

” Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Chapter 6 – Remarkable Incident of Dr. Lanyon
Although there is a large reward out for Hyde and many details of his life are uncovered, the police have no clue as to his whereabouts. As more time passes, Mr. Utterson is relieved that Hyde seems to be gone. Dr. Jekyll begins to act like his former self–entertaining guests, getting involved in charities and religion, being generally at peace. For close to two months, Mr. Utterson spends a great deal of time with Dr. Jekyll and his recently reconciled friend, Dr. Lanyon. But one day, Mr. Utterson is suddenly turned away; Dr. Jekyll is not seeing visitors. After repeated attempts, Mr. Utterson goes to visit Dr. Lanyon and is surprised to find him in a deathly state. At first, Mr. Utterson thinks that his friend, being a doctor, is self-aware that his days are limited. But Dr. Lanyon speaks of being in shock about some matter he cannot recover from. Mr. Utterson mentions that Dr. Jekyll is also ill. Dr. Lanyon turns sour and refuses to speak about Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Lanyon is not surprised when told that Dr. Jekyll has refused to meet. He says:

“Some day, Utterson, after I am dead, you may perhaps come to learn the right and wrong of this. I cannot tell you.” Chapter 6, pg. 73

Mr. Utterson writes a note to Dr. Jekyll, asking why he is being turned away, and about his sudden break with Dr. Lanyon. Dr. Jekyll replies that from now on, he will live a life of seclusion. He writes back cryptically, “If I am the chief of sinners, I am the chief of sufferers also” (pg. 74). Mr. Utterson cannot understand how things have changed so suddenly. Without the presence of Hyde, Dr. Jekyll seemed to have recovered nicely. Now, life-long relationships are broken. Taking cue from what Dr. Lanyon said, Mr. Utterson is convinced there is some underlying reason for this.

A week later, Dr. Lanyon passes away. After the funeral, Mr. Utterson locks himself in his office and takes out an envelope prepared by his deceased friend. It reads, “Private: for the hands of G.J. Utterson ALONE, and in case of his predecease to be destroyed unread.” In it is another letter with the words: “not to be opened till the death or disappearance of Dr. Henry Jekyll.” Mr. Utterson quickly notices the words “disappearance,” just like the will. Although he desires to get to the bottom of this mystery, professional honor prompts Mr. Utterson to put the letter back into his safe. Meanwhile, Mr. Utterson gets periodic reports from Poole regarding Dr. Jekyll’s condition. Poole confesses that Dr. Jekyll is constantly confined to the laboratory and is often out of spirits. Because of the consistency of the reports, Mr. Utterson visits less frequently.”

dr jekyll and mr hyde

in the first event a man is brutally beating another person on the street in which the maid sees this and is very scared and faints. The weapon lying with the man in the floor. ” the murderer was gone long ago, but there lay his victim in the middle of the lane, incredibly mangles “.

Next Mr Utterson goes to identify the body as Denver carew. They then question the maid and ask what Mr Hyde looks like. ” patricularly small and particularly wicked looking “. Mr Utterson and the maid go into Me Hydes house and search.

I think that the key point within this chapter was the maid seeing the mans death. This is because it led up to a key event in which Mr Utterson goes to Mr Hydes house to search it for more clues. I also think that this could lead onto something much bigger than just finding out the killer but also finding out the truth about Mr Hyde

Reply from Mr Fields !

I’m a big man. I do not need you telling me how to do my job. Do you think for one second i care about that little girl. She decided to put her filthy black hand upon me. That is code viloation 270. DO NOT assault and officer ever! Why do you think we target you blacks, youre all the same. So dont contact me ever you little kid mind your business and stay in your books, because i will do the same to you??.

mr fields

Dear Mr Fields your video has shocked myself and pupils in my school too.The attack was on a young girl and was not acceptable in school or anywhere. To think boys in london say, ‘ i want to move to America’ when things like this happen. The fact you think you were right is appalling and to charge a girl for your actions.

Imagine you had a daughter and she was assaulted by a police officer who was a male. im what way does violence help within a school. It gives the students a reason to fight, especially when an officer of the law decides to do it. Please enlighten me on why you thought this was right. The fact this had to be recorded to get any attention is shocking. This should not happen at all.

As a black male I have seen many people hurt or even killed for being coloured, which to me is very shocking. The fact a man wanted a cigarette and was shocked out by a officer, the fact a boy said ‘my hands are up don’t shoot’ and he shot anyways, shows how officers really feel about coloured people. I am not racist, yet these things continue to occur in life everyday, with other cultures and races too.

I have never seen a person be so harmed by a officer for simply not wanting to get up. Yes, she may have hit you first however, you’re a big man and it should not hurt if she hit you. You’re trained to deal with situations like this and could have, in fact should have dealt with the situation properly instead. Now you have all this drama and have been fired, so the fact you may have felt disrespected has cost you your job and worldwide hatred by people of every race.

I have never been handled like that by my mum or dad let alone a teacher or a police officer. You could have badly hurt this girl. Being a police officer you should understand that you will get disrespected all the time and that you cannot deal with silly situations such as this with such force. Next time it could be a man who wants to fight or has a weapon, and people will not care, as you were classed as a racist officer in the eyes of the people who saw the video. You should know it was a plot to act up. Many officers have fell for this and have ended up out of job. To think a officer put his gun into a mans hand who he had just tasered, to make it seem as if he had a weapon. This was caught on film and now you along with other officers are the most hated in USA and UK. Well done Mr Fields, what you have done has just blasted another revolution to show the harshness of racism towards black people in and out of places you should feel safe in.

I hope you realise your ‘right’ was a wrong.

yours sincerely, Xavi.

racism, struggle to proceed

people are racist because they do not believe in equality amongst everyones race. some people think only one race is ‘superior’. the kkk is a prime example of people not believing in everyones equality. there are things happening all over the world to young people. as a young coloured male, i have seen many people struggle to proceed because of ‘discrimination’. to say ‘my hands are up, please dont shoot’ is quite sad to know. everyone should be equal and not have to struggle in a world where racism overpowers you.

i think coloured people can be just as rasict. a recent documentary showed a very hurt black woman shouting racist slurs at a white man. the fact this man was just videoing for the bbc shocked me as i did not know we could be so hurtful to someone because of what ‘their people’ have done. however i think we can be rasict to each other, constantly slurring the n word at each other, but are ready to fight those of a different colour or race.
